How Now Shall They Eat?

Charity or Justice:

The discussion about charity or justice has been ongoing for sometime...I think I aim for justice but often don't get past charity...maybe practicing justice takes practice, lots of practice. This helped me today:

Charity is commendable; everyone should be charitable. But justice aims to create a social order in which if the individuals choose not to be charitable, people will not go hungry, unschooled, or sick without care. Charity depends on the vicissitudes of whim and personal wealth; justice depends on commitment instead of circumstance. Faith-based charity provides crumbs from the table; faith-based justice offers a plate at the table.

Bill Moyers.
