About 20 years ago my good friend Joel picked UNLV to win the NCAA basketball tournament because he saw their name on a hat that some guy named Mark was wearing. To this day, Joel knows nothing about college basketball. But he picked a winner 20 years ago. I am still bitter. Every year I fill out the bracket, every year I pick the wrong winner. In 15 years of marriage, Bev is leading this annual competition
9-6. And she watches about as much college basketball as Joel.
My final four (with all due respect to Presiden Obama-who is on Jay Leno tonight;and I don't at all get why people might criticize that--who is picking North Carolina).
Semi Finals: Louisville over Memphis
Semi Finals: Pitt over UNC
Final: Pitt over Louisville (which officially puts the kiss of death on Pitt...chances are good that someone like Duke will win the whole thing)

I'm hurt, Matt. I watch March madness every year, Beim. But you're right, I don't know jack about it. And to set the record straight, it was a Red Sweatshirt that Mark McComb was wearing. I can still picture it in my mind's eye.
I did fill out a bracket this year, but it was on facebook and I deleted it. I was too lazy to fill it out again. for the record: Duke, North Carolina, Connecticut, Mich. State. I'm picking, OK cheering, for Mich. State - been a fan since living in GR.
(I was in the lower mainland until this evening, did a memorial service for an uncle toda, otherwise I would've run over to your digs.)
PS No, I didn't pick the Runnin' Rebels this year. They're in the NIT for the first time in about 30 years.
All I know is that you said "Um, I'll pick them" and I am pretty sure you didn't know what UNLV stood for. I am still not sure you know now. It was as brilliant as the Canucks scoring on their own empty net...once in a lifetime.
Beim, a few things:
1 I'm telling the Easter morning story from your blog tomorrow, unless you forbid me. Even then, I'll just tell it without using your name. Don't worry, I'll assign appropriate credit/blame.
2 March madness. If you go back up the comments on your blog, you'll note that I was 3/4 on the final four. I had the finalists picked. Not sad to say that my heart probably got in the way when I picked Mich-State to win. How would you have explained that in a follow-up post, had the guy you mocked for picking UNLV 20 years ago, picked the winner THE YEAR YOU MOCKED HIM! Alas, it did not come to fruition. But a little more credit than "to this day, Joel knows nothing about college basketball" is due ...
3 What date is Rob Bell playing the R.E.M. Lee Theatre in Terrace? We might be able to fit him during the intermission of the VAN-NYI pre-season game in September.
