I finally got worn down and bought "The Shack" this past weekend. I also ended up reading it this weekend. That is another blog entry I will do later this week. As well, going to Seattle to listen to Brian McLaren and his "Everything Must Change" tour he is on.
Last night we had a staff meeting where we talked about hospitality and what that might look like in a Christian school community. I always find it ironic that we were born to be in relationship with others and with Christ, but the individualism and consumerism of our western culture says we need to turn our hearts toward independence and separation from others. This morning I got this quote from Soph that helped bring some clarity.
We build walls around our hearts, around our homes, around our land, around our borders to keep out strangers, the different, the other; to protect ourselves from getting hurt or from having to share our space with others. We guard our hearts, our land, and our country with great vigilance until the very guarding obsesses us and we become so outwardly focused and defensive that we lose touch with ourselves and our humanity. In our efforts to protect and defend we become disconnected and fragmented.

well said. sadly, it's so true.
oh and beims, you're right, i always dine and dash :)
Yep, that's true. I rediscovered that over the course of our recent hospital visit(s). There is a lot of strange and different in a hospital, especially one like BC Children's. They seem so carefully sequestered from regular society -- who ever hears these stories? I'm working on my revelations in a blog post of my own, and some of the convictions I'm dealing with.
I'd love to hear more about your impressions of Brian McLaren's tour when you return.
